20 Days to Ready: Create a Home Inventory (Day 2)

20 Days to Ready is a series of simple, daily tasks to help you better prepare for emergencies and protect your family when disaster strikes. Follow along, day by day, and you’ll be more ready (for just about anything) in a few short weeks.

ASSIGNMENT: Catalogue Your Personal Belongings

As much as you care for your belongings, a hurricane, fire or burglary can take them from you in an instant. Creating a detailed home inventory can be a huge help if your things are destroyed and you need to file an insurance claim in the future–and it can also help you assess whether you need additional coverage now.

There are a few different ways to take a home inventory:

  • Take video to capture the contents of each room, and narrate details about your possessions; be sure to open cabinets and drawers and use a checklist, so you don’t miss a thing.
  • Take photos of your valuables and make detailed notes; a checklist can help make sure you don’t overlook items
  • Download a smartphone app to photograph and capture descriptions of all your stuff.

Whatever method you choose, create a backup of your home inventory and store your inventory off-site (in a safe deposit box, on a USB or external hard drive, with a friend, or in the cloud), along with receipts and model numbers for your valuables. And be sure to update the inventory after you make any significant purchases.

This is a task the whole family can help with and, after an emergency, you’ll likely be glad you got it done.
