Earth Day Countdown: LED Bulbs

led.jpgThis year, April 22 marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day! In commemoration of this important event, we’ll be surfacing articles in the following weeks with news and tips on making our daily lives more eco-friendly:

There are a number of advantages that LED light bulbs possess over their incandescent and compact fluorescent (CFL) counterparts. They’re more energy-efficient, longer-lasting, and don’t contain any hazardous materials either. However, if not used correctly, some consumers might not be utilizing their full potential. In order to maximize the usefulness of LED bulbs, a few key concepts should be kept in mind:

  • LED bulbs shouldn’t be used in unusually hot settings, as overheating may lead them to become unreliable
  • LED bulbs efficiency is most optimal when placed in lights that are constantly in use
  • Some LED bulbs can be damaged when used in a dimmable fixture; check the specs before replacing
