Great List Katherine, my favorite part was of course the dark chocolate, but any chocolate will do. Also, another tip is to put kitty litter in an old coffee can and put candles in it and dry matches and use for heat, along with extra blankets, and sponge pads or mattresses, which you can get from [text edited by admin].
Make sure not to rule out the availability of a firearm for personal and family defense. Safe rooms will not stop a determined invasion and depending on location, it can take hours during a natural disaster to come to your aid. Take a lesson from the Katrina debacle! Looters took a horrible toll and the local police didn't help much either, especially when they started disarming people in their homes. The best type of firearm can be determined by visiting several internet sites or just googling it. The main thing to remember however is that in any survival situation you must have the WILL to survive, everything else is just a set of tools. No WILL and you will die!

HAM radio license is easy with some studying , the ARRL.org has the question and answer pool, search technician class question pool. From the "been there done that" department, repeaters will be down after 24 hours or so if everything else is out too, but HF is always there( short of sunspots). A rig, some wire, and some coax and I'm talkin around the world! FRS radios for the family is a must, Walmart has them. As for everything else, expect NOTHING in the way of help from ANYONE for 72 hours or more! None, zilch, nada! Food, clothing, shelter are must haves! Credit card machines don't work without power, neither do fuel pumps!! Propane grill and a few spare tanks. Research h"how to make ice with fertilizer" ... Very cool. Way to make what you need. If you THINK you are prepared for things, try LIVING with your supplies for four days... Then you will know for sure!

The part about ham radio is really a good idea. Now you can get your ham radio technician license without learning the morse code. Our family; wife, son and I, all earned our license after taking the classes and then taking the test. It wasn't really easy but it wasn't too difficult either. So get your ham license and hook up with a local repeater and you are good to go.
