If you’re preparing for a move to the Valley of the Sun, you should know that Phoenix is one of the hottest U.S. cities. It’s not uncommon for desert temps to break 100 degrees during the peak summer months of June, July and August.
If you will need to keep items in storage when you make your move to Phoenix, here are a few tips for protecting your belongings in extreme heat.
Climate-controlled storage is the safest bet.
High temperatures and high humidity are two of the leading causes of damage to goods in storage. The scorching summers in Arizona can leave their mark on even the hardiest items.
Severe hot weather can and often will damage items in your storage unit. Things like important documents, computer equipment and electronics, wood or leather furniture, photographs, books, clothing, artwork and other valuable possessions are all susceptible to extreme temperatures, if they’re not properly protected.
Climate-controlled facilities can maintain a steady temperature range between 45 and 85° using central air conditioning and heat. Maintaining this temperature can minimize risk of damage to your belongings from the harsh heat, and it makes the storage unit more comfortable whenever you need to access your unit.
Things you should not store outside of a climate-controlled environment in Arizona:
Tapes, CDs, DVDs
Cosmetics and toiletries
Some other tips to keep in mind:
Remove batteries from appliances and electronics.
Keep refrigerator doors slightly ajar and consider using the space inside for additional storage.
NEVER store food in your unit.
By following these guidelines and considering climate-controlled storage when possible, you’ll minimize damage to your items in self-storage.
