As much as you care for your belongings, a hurricane, fire or burglary can take them from you in an instant. Creating a detailed home inventory can be a huge help if your things are destroyed and you need to file an insurance claim in the future — and it can also help you assess whether you need additional coverage now.
There are a few different ways to take a home inventory:
Whatever method you choose, create a backup of your home inventory and store your inventory off-site (in a safe deposit box, on a USB or external hard drive, with a friend, or in the cloud), along with receipts and model numbers for your valuables. And be sure to update the inventory after you make any significant purchases.
