When it comes to bargain shopping I am really good at buying non-necessities but 2011 is the year that I am going to incorporate savvy grocery shopping into my routine as well. I’ve come up with a few tips for easy ways to save money on groceries. Hopefully these tips help both you and I save money as we head into the new year!

1. Plan Your Meals Ahead of Time

Some people are pros at planning out what they want to eat day-by-day. Me? I try to make a list and usually fail miserably.

Starting in the new year my goal is to take a little bit of time each Sunday planning out the meals I would like to eat each day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If it’s already set in your head what you’re going to make that day the chances that you’ll just bypass your plans in exchange for take-out are slimmer.

2. Make a List

Here’s two small pieces of advice: Never go into a grocery store hungry and never go into a grocery store without a list. Committing either of these sins is likely to cause you to over-buy.

When you make your list, really take some time to think about what you actually need and follow the meal planning guide you already made for yourself in step 1!

3. Coupons, Coupons, Coupons!

Now that you’ve got your list, try to find some coupons that will help you save money on your purchase! No worries if you don’t get the Sunday paper, which is chock full of coupons because I’ve figured out two ways to get around subscribing to the paper:

A. Head to your local dollar store to pick up the Sunday newspaper. Many sell the Sunday paper for just a buck!

B. Resources like coupons.com exist solely to provide almost the same coupons you find in the newspaper! You go on the site and print only the coupons you’ll use.

Here’s a good tip to remember when you’re at the grocery store: Most of the time you can use TWO coupons per item if you can get so lucky. Grocery stores often release their own coupons in their fliers, but it’s manufacturer coupons that appear on sites like coupons.com and in the Sunday paper. You can combine one grocery store coupon with one manufacturer coupon for ultimate savings!

4. Register for Your Grocery Store’s Loyalty Program

If you aren’t yet a member of your grocery store’s loyalty program make a beeline for the customer service desk as soon as you walk into the store and get yourself a card. These little cards are virtually no work and ensure that you’ll save a little bit of extra cash when you’re at the store.

Now go forth and shop! Start slow with incorporating these money saving tips into your routine and you’ll find yourself with a few extra dollars in your pocket in no time!
