It’s no coincidence that one of the most popular and timeless pieces of advice in real estate is, “Location, location, location.” And while finding the “perfect” home is important, finding the right neighborhood should get equal, if not more, consideration. Square footage, colors and other aesthetic elements of a home can always be changed, but a location is permanent.
“Buyer property searches are typically geared toward specific criteria in a house, helping us laser in on the ‘perfect space.’ But what we can’t always observe online, that’s equally important, is how a day in the life would be at your new house,” says Heather Ostrom, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Roseville, California.
If you’re like many prospective homebuyers, you may be looking for an area with friendly neighbors, amenities that align with your lifestyle or proximity to good schools.
Once you’ve narrowed down priorities that are important to you, communicate them to everyone involved in the transaction. This includes your friends, family, and, yes – your trusted real estate agent. These people will able to point out things that you may not have thought about (for example, what things might drive you nuts about the area, or that your favorite coffee shop is only a mile away from that home you’ve been checking out)!
After you decide on the type of home and community you want to live in, doing your research is crucial. Chat with the neighbors to learn about the neighborhood, and pop into the local shops and businesses to get a feel for the community. You’ll have a much better idea of what to expect and this will likely help you decide whether the move will ultimately be the right one for your family.
