Hitting the open road alone and experiencing the sense of freedom and adventure of riding a motorcycle is what it’s all about for most riders. But for some, they want to share that experience and bring someone along. That desire to share the fun is certainly not new, as the sidecar was invented around the turn of the 20th Century, according to Rider magazine.

While the details are spotty, in 1893, a French newspaper created a contest that offered a prize for the best way tic array a passenger, says Rider magazine. The final solutions presented were the forecar (passenger in the front), trailer-car (passenger in the back), and the sidecar – the design that is the basis for today’s models.

These days, there are a number of reasons a rider might want a sidecar: to bring along a friend or spouse; to share the road with a canine friend; or simply for the fun of having an unusual vehicle with an eye-catching paint job or design.

Take a look at some of the interesting sidecar designs and uses in our slideshow below:

*Note: Like with motorcycles, safety laws for sidecars may vary by state, so make sure to consult your state’s regulations regarding safety gear and safe riding practices.

Motorcycles, even those with sidecars, aren’t just for scenic rides around town. In some places, you can head to the racetrack to see sidecar racing competitions, either on dirt tracks or pavement. There you’ll see the sidecar ‘passenger’ doing maneuvers to shift the center of gravity of the vehicle…maneuvers that are obviously not advisable for real-world riding. But fun to watch, nonetheless.
