For a city so large—more than 1 million people—Phoenix has the safest drivers. The city continues to rank number one, in its population range, for the ninth year in a row, according to theAllstate America’s Best Drivers Report.
The report, released Aug. 27, ranks 200 of the largest American cities in terms of car collision frequency to decode the nation’s safest drivers, and Phoenix is at the top among cities of its population size.
While the report doesn’t delve into specific factors for collision frequency, Phoenix’s ranking could be attributed to effective city planning and investments in future planning—the Street Transportation Department has a five-year program to provide more than $500 million in improvements to the city’s infrastructure, including streets and sidewalks.
Across the rest of state, Tucson and Mesa also ranked highly in the report. Tucson is the safest city among those cities with a population between 500,000 and 750,000, and Mesa is the safest-driving city with a population between 250,000 and 500,000, according to the report.
